Visual exploration, Week 3 (16/10/2023)

For this week's homework we were set a task similar to our 'cathedral' session where we had to select two words from a list and utilizing our alphabet of marks and two a2 pages separated into four sections create compositions from our imagination. For each section of the two words, we had to create differing illustrations with three dissimilar mark making techniques and mediums.

For instance, for my first four section composition I chose wind as the theme word (as shown below). For this composition, I utilized mediums including; ink, charcoal, marker pen, oil pastels, highlighter and fine line pen.

Top left: An illustration of a sea full of wind turbines using charcoal and ink with the hatching for the metal, block shapes to create depth and the sky on the horizon swirling with the wind.

Top right: An illustration of clothes blowing on a washing line using marker pen with cross hatching for the clothes stitching, signal lines for the movement of the clothes and line and waving line work to communicate the energy of the wind.

Bottom left: An illustration of a crow using ink and oil pastels with diagonal lines to segment the background sky, scale pattern to display the iridescent feathers and uneven spirals to illustrate the light reflecting into the bird's eye.

Bottom right: An illustration of a view out into a stormy night with highlighter pens with brick patterns to replicate pattern design on the curtains, rain drop shapes to communicate the atmospheric weather and repetitive curves to create the 3d shape of the curtain rail.

Wind

Additionally, for my second word I chose light as the theme (as shown below). For this composition I utilized mediums including; ink, coloured pencil, charcoal, oil pastels and fine line pen.

Top left: An illustration representing a heat haze/mirage using oil pastels and ink with central strokes to create the depth of the light, flat brush patterns to visualize the warmth of the light source and small circular hatches to outline the light's source.

Top right: An illustration of shadows casted through a hand using coloured pencils with circles to display the light rays, small squiggles to visualize floaters (small dark shapes that affect vision) and muffled lining to outline the shape of the hand.

Bottom left: An illustration of a person being hypnotized by a television using fine line pen with wavy lines to communicate the electronic waves, layered boxing to visualize the tunnel of the television and brick work pattern design to represent the outline of the building's window.

Bottom right: An illustration of a mouse walking though the darkness using charcoal with cross hatching to visualize the environment hidden in the darkness, repetitive lines to show the texture of the clothes and strong swiping to create the shadows outside of the candle light.

Light

In conclusion, this task not only enhanced my imaginative and technical skills but also encouraged me to further explore the importance and meaning of mark making and referencing my collection of alphabet mark making.
