Visual exploration, Week 6 (06/11/2023)

In the sixth week into the module of visual exploration, we were set the brief "On and off" which were two compositions visualizing our interpretation of on and off. Within this task, we were encouraged to be imaginative and experiment with a wide range of mark making and techniques to enhance the visual language of the pieces.

Firstly, when beginning this brief I started by brainstorming my ideas for these two pieces. For instance, some of these concepts that I decided not to pursue included hibernation, cooking, music/performance or vampires. For each of these concepts, I created draft thumbnails to develop my concept for the framing, techniques and aspects of the compositions with written notes and sketches.

In conclusion, I decided to continue from the thumbnail my idea of "King of the castle" as my interpretation for on and off. This concept involved a goat being king of the castle on physically on the castle for the side of "On". Then, for my off piece the king of the castle had been overtaken by a new ruler leaving him off the throne of the castle.

For these compositions, from the thumbnail and earlier brainstorming I decided to employ ink and created different layers of tone and line through washing out the ink. Moreover, I tried to incorporate mark making such as the cobbled stones and the wind into the piece to create a more expressive and textured environment.
