In the final two weeks of the module of visual exploration, we were tasked with the brief "Popping out" which was a eight panel story board of a selected character from the local folk brief popping out to blank. In this brief, we were challenged to take all the experimentation in mark making, printing and composition throughout the module and create eight distinct panels employing the same medium/style.
As shown below, for my brief I decided to use this character from the local folk brief as they stood out among the other characters due to they're positivity. From these sketches and notes I had made during the local folk brief, I began to enhance this character further with a variety of different concepts and started to develop my ideas for they're story. In the end I chose the title "Sol popped out to the bookshop" as I saw them near a book shop and I chose the name Sol as it means sun in a number of different languages.
From these concept notes, I began to draft the thumbnails for the panel compositions and thought about the placement and framing of the pieces. I chose to place Sol in the centre point of most of the panels to visualize they're bright and positive energy that stood out from others. As for the medium of the panels, I decided to go for multimedia collage as I wanted to create depth and layers within each of the compositions. Moreover, I decided to use muted shades of colours within the environments to contrast with Sol's bright golden exterior to visualize his personality and body language. Furthermore, I decided to employ collage as the abstract and simplistic shapes within the panels to enhance the imagination and mood of the scene.
